Self Hypnosis

Self-hypnosis is a wonderful and practical tool for helping yourself to some much needed rest and relaxation. Self hypnosis for stress management benefits both your mind and body by helping you relax, reducing stress hormone levels, and adjusting your state of mind toward positive outcomes. This type of mind/body 'restoration' will actually add years to your life!

Along with meditation and imagery, self-hypnosis can usefully be used as a part of a daily stress management routine.

Self Hypnosis: Step 1

Whether it's your favorite recliner chair, or your bed, find a comfortable, quiet place to sit or lie down.

Close your eyes and relax your body. Focus on your breathing for a minute and slow it down. Pay attention to any areas of your body that naturally tense up and focus on relaxing them. Imagine a wave of relaxation running down your body...beginning from your head to your shoulders, to your back to your legs and down to your feet. Continue running this wave of relaxation through your body until you are feeling completely relaxed and disinclined toward movement.

Self Hypnosis: Step 2:

Next you want to begin reinforcing appropriate relaxation suggestions to yourself. If you are trying to correct certain habits or behaviors that have developed, such as waking up periodically throughout the night, you will want to have prepared affirmations ready to say to yourself. For example:

"I sleep deeply and peacefully, and awake feeling rested and full of energy."

"I love sleeping deeply through the night with no cares or concerns."

"I love that lazy, heavenly feeling of my body being totally calm and gently sinking into the bed."

If you simply want to relax into a good night's sleep, then continue to repeat relaxation suggestions to yourself until you no longer feel able, or you fall asleep. For example:

"I take deeper, longer, more relaxed breaths"

"With each breath I become more relaxed"

"I am calm and relaxed. My thoughts are under control"

A self-hypnosis session averages between 15-25 minutes, but it can last however long is needed. If you prefer the idea of listening to a trained hypnotherapist, you can always download a hypnosis mp3 and listen to that instead. Mp3 downloads are available at:
